On 30 July 1945 the USS Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese submarine after delivering components for the atomic bombs to be dropped on Japan. Up to 900 men initially survived but many succumbed to shark attack, dehydration, and salt poisoning waiting for rescue; only 316 were saved.
