20 years ago, on 11 October 2005, the US Army Corps of Engineers pumped the last of the floodwaters out of New Orleans, 43 days after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Experts still don't know how many died in the costliest disaster in US history but estimates suggest at least 971 perished.
